a far away concert
los angeles, 2020
A Far Away Concert is a meditative sound experiment performed by twenty-two musicians spanning from California to Australia, recorded via zoom from my house in los angeles on june 7th, 2020.
By embracing the things that make us feel the most disconnected during quarantine, a far away concert uses the latency of digital communication as a compositional element. Delay and interference become instruments of their own and, spinning an invisible web of digital feedback, fill in the thousands of miles of space between each performer. Inspired by the idea of ouroboros, the composition uses round robin notation to illustrate a circle around the globe. As the piece is performed, the notes move around the world in real time, drawing a line through space, time, and the distance between us all.
